Southbury, CT – Free, private social services screenings for food stamps to help any Connecticut resident facing difficult times will take place Friday, Aug. 8, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Jewish Federation of Western Connecticut at 444 Main St. N. in Southbury. The Federation’s Brownstein Jewish Family Service has teamed up with StayWell Health Center to continue offering these free monthly social service screenings, by appointment, for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly food stamps.
The screenings have helped many Connecticut residents who are falling through the cracks and having a tough time making ends meet. People who are struggling to put food on the table, families where one or both parents recently lost their jobs, and seniors in their 80s have all been assisted. The public is welcome to call to learn about income guidelines for SNAP. With the new income guidelines, the gross monthly income for SNAP eligibility for a single person under age 60 is $1,773 and $2,393 for a household of two. During the past year, dozens of local residents have been found eligible for food stamps during the screenings.
Reservations are required for the half-hour screenings, which are given by John Potusek, SNAP outreach coordinator at StayWell. To RSVP, call Debby Horowitz, Brownstein JFS director, at 203-267-3177, e xt. 310. All calls are confidential.
