Naugatuck men arrested, charged in kayak thefts

Middlebury emblemTwo Naugatuck men were arrested in Middlebury Tuesday, April 21, after they were observed entering a yard at 512 Shadduck Road and placing two kayaks stored by the homeowner in the rear of the home into a jeep operated by one of them, Peter Johansen.

Officer Alton Cronin was working a detail focusing on distracted driving violators when he was approached by a citizen who witnessed the theft. With the assistance of Officers R. Pruchnicki and P. Deeley, the suspect vehicle was stopped and the two arrests were made. The stolen items were returned to their owner.

Police charged Peter Johansen, 29, of Naugatuck with sixth-degree larceny, possession of narcotics paraphernalia and numerous motor vehicle charges. He was released on a $10,000 bond.

Police also charged Micheal Sular, 31, with sixth-degree larceny and possession of narcotics paraphernalia. He also was released on a $10,000 bond.
