Middlebury Police Chief James Viadero said a thief smashed and grabbed Tuesday, May 19, and Wednesday, May 20, to obtain items from vehicles parked at Hop Brook Dam Park. Victims told police they parked their vehicles in the early afternoon to walk on the trails in the park. When they returned to their vehicles later on, they discovered someone had broken a window in their vehicles and removed personal items from them.
In one instance, a credit card that was taken was later used at a Target store in Waterbury. Video surveillance footage has been obtained of the responsible party and suspect vehicle.
Several similar incidents have occurred in Oxford and other towns adjoining the I-84 corridor, and a suspect has been identified as a result of an arrest made in Farmington, Conn. Warrants for the suspect are being prepared at this time.
Residents are urged to use caution when parking in areas around parks and town walking paths. Do not leave personal items such as purses, electronics or other valuables visible in the passenger area. Lock them in the trunk of the vehicle.
Area residents who have experienced similar thefts are asked to report them to the authorities in the jurisdiction in which they occurred, As a result of this ongoing investigation, it has become apparent the individual responsible has been active in the I-84 corridor and it is suspected that he has committed similar thefts.
The suspect will be identified after the arrest warrants being sought by the Middlebury Police Department have been issued.
