Father of Rachel Bashevkin
Irving Bashevkin, 91, died June 7. A resident of Sarasota, Fla., formerly of Adams, Mass., he was the widower of Esther (Green) Bashevkin, who died in 2010.
He leaves two daughters, Rachel Bashevkin of Middlebury, Conn., and Sylvia Bashevkin of Toronto, Canada, and three grandchildren, Elie Bilmes of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Aviva Levy and her husband, Adam Walman, of Toronto, Canada; and Dalia Levy of Vancouver, Canada. He also is survived by his loving companion, Arline Levine of Sarasota; three of his eight sisters and brothers: Robert Bashevkin of Williamstown, Mass.; Helen Yulman of Palm Beach, Fla.; and Ruth Kelman of Voorhees, N.J.; and many nieces and nephews.
A son of David and Annie (Feder) Bashevkin, he was born and raised in North Adams, Mass., and earned a degree from Bay Path College in 1943 just as he entered the U. S. Army. He served with the 107th Evacuation Hospital in Europe during World War II, a 400-bed hospital for which he was responsible for all medical equipment and medications and earned the rank of technical sergeant.
Upon his discharge in 1945, Mr. Bashevkin joined the family business, Butler Coal and Grain Company in Adams, which became Butler Wholesale Products. He worked there until his retirement in 1994.
Mr. Bashevkin served on the board of many organizations and earned several community awards, including the Judge Ernest Rosasco Humanitarian Award in North Adams, Carpe Diem Award and Civic Award from Bay Path College in Springfield, and Eliezer ben Yehuda Award from Sinai Academy in Pittsfield.
His funeral and burial were in Sarasota, Fla. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sarasota Manatee Jewish Housing Council, 1951 North Honore Ave., Sarasota, FL 34235 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
