CT residents victims of boating tragedy

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) reported Monday, June 13, that one is dead, one is missing and two others have been hospitalized in Long Island after a boating mishap. The group of Connecticut residents apparently set off from Hammonassset Beach State Park in Madison, Conn., Sunday with a kayak and a paddleboard.

One person was pronounced dead in Long Island this morning and two others were taken to the hospital after they were found on a beach in the Suffolk County Long Island town of Southold, N.Y.  DEEP’s Encon Police said a fourth person who was apparently with them when they set off sometime Sunday evening is still missing.

The deceased is a 31-year-old male.  He was pronounced dead by Long Island authorities in Southold.  The two others – an adult female and a young girl – were taken to Eastern Long Island Hospital where they are being treated for hypothermia and are in stable condition.

The woman and youngster were found on the beach early this morning after their calls were heard by a nearby resident. The deceased was located a short distance way. The missing person is a 44-year-old man from Manchester, Conn.

EnCon Police are assisting the Southold Police Department in the investigation. The U.S. Coast Guard and multiple local fire departments are searching for the missing person.

UPDATE: At about 2 p.m. June 13, DEEP announced the body of the missing man was recovered shortly after noon today in Gardiners Bay, a short distance from the Suffolk County Long Island town of Southold, N.Y. The recovery was made by the Clinton Police Department, which had joined in a search for him along with several local police and fire departments in Connecticut and Long Island, as well as the U.S. Coast Guard.
