Barnhart Crane and Rigging of Middletown, Conn., has been hired, apparently by Competitive Power Ventures, to move three 343,000-pound (171.5-ton) transformers from a railroad spur in Litchfield, Conn., to the Towantic Energy Center in Oxford, Conn. The route will take the transformers through Litchfield, Morris, Watertown and Middlebury on their way to Oxford. They will come into Middlebury on routes 63 and 64, which are state roads, and then travel on Long Meadow Road, Lockwood Road and Christian Road, all of which are town roads.
The height of each transformer, when on the truck, will be 19 feet, the flatbed trailer holding it will be 60 feet long and, provided we are reading the engineered drawing correctly, the length of the truck plus trailer will be 112 feet, 10 inches. One transformer per night is to moved through Middlebury Tuesday, Nov. 22; Tuesday, Dec. 6; and Tuesday, Dec. 13.
Barnhart is hosting a meeting on the haul for affected municipalities (Litchfield, Morris, Watertown, Middlebury and Oxford) Wednesday, Oct. 26, at 11 a.m. in Oxford Town Hall.
It appears this project has been underway at least since August, but notice of the transport was not received at Middlebury Town Hall until Wednesday, Oct. 19.
