The Newtown Savings Bank free summer concert series kicks off Wednesday, July 5, at 6:30 p.m. in Hollow Park in Woodbury with a performance by Blues Alley. Bring your picnic and blanket or chairs and enjoy a summer evening of great music, different every week for five weeks!

Blues Alley is “House Rockin’ Blues, upbeat charismatic American music that forces the listener to tap their foot, bop their head and dance fervently. It requires a tight groove, dynamic arrangements and a genuine love for the music. Blues Alley has earned a reputation as one of Connecticut’s tightest, hardest-working bands.

The band formed in 1992 when harmonica player/lead vocalist Dave Sanderson met with guitarist Russ Gordon. Finding a mutual admiration and love of the blues, they decided to start a serious band. Dave brought in veteran players Alex Peckham on bass, Steve Levy on Hammond organ and the most recent addition, John Murphy on drums/percussion.

Blues Alley earned the privilege of being one of the regular blues acts at Toad’s Place, opening for Room Full of Blues; James “Super Harp” Cotton; legends John Mayall, George Thorogood and Johnny Winter; along with rock legends Three Dog Night and J. Giels. The Special Olympics asked Blues Alley to perform three times.

Performers for the remaining concerts will be The Rakes with alternative Country July 12, Root Six with classic Rock ’n Roll July 19, 60s Satisfaction with 1960s favorites July 26 and The Eric Hallenbeck Trio with jazz music Aug. 2.
