Middlebury Police Chief Fran Dabbo said on Sept. 1 Officer Pat Deely received a theft complaint from the Highfield Club in Middlebury. Bill Murray, the golf pro, explained several thefts occurred during August. He stated a set of golf clubs valued at $3,500 was stolen out of the pro shop. The maintenance department reported an Echo trimmer, gasoline and two containers of insecticide valued at $900 were stolen. Additionally, $2,800 was reported stolen.
An investigation led to the arrest of Philip D. Beach IV, 48, of Meadow Brook Road in Oxford, a former employee at the Club. After he was observed stealing gasoline, his employment was immediately terminated.
During the investigation, Deely determined some of the stolen items were pawned at a Waterbury pawn shop. He went to the pawn shop with Murray and the owner of the golf clubs. The owner was able to positively identify his set of golf clubs.
The store manager was able to positively identify Beach as the individual who pawned them. The police then applied for and received an arrest warrant charging Beach with larceny.
Tuesday, Sept. 19, Beach turned himself in at the Middlebury Police Department and the warrant charging him with sixth-degree larceny was served. Beach was released on a Written Promise to Appear for an Oct. 4 appearance in the Waterbury Court. The investigation is continuing, and more arrests are expected.
