Loving mother and grandmother

Jennie (Massimo) Calabrese of Middlebury passed away peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 29, after a brief illness. She was the daughter of Domenick Massimo and Flora (Cappella) Massimo. Her husband of 56 years, John N. Calabrese Sr., predeceased her.

Jennie was a graduate of the University of Connecticut, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration. She worked at Peat Marwick Mitchel & Company; as a substitute teacher in the Waterbury and Watertown public school systems; and as director of the Nest Day Care Center in Watertown.

Jennie enjoyed traveling and had visited Europe, the Bahamas, Florida and the entire east coast during her lifetime. She was a fan of UConn Women’s Basketball and made it a priority to watch their games.  She was known for her homemade Italian cookies, which were the highlight of family holiday dinners.

She is survived by her sons, Hon. Domenick N. Calabrese and his wife, Dawn, of Watertown and John N. Calabrese Jr. and his wife, Dawn, of Middlebury. Her two granddaughters, Ava and Paige Calabrese of Watertown, were a source of great joy to her.  She particularly enjoyed going out to breakfast and lunch with them.

Jennie is also survived by her brother-in-law, Anthony Calabrese of Watertown and his partner, Lillian Kuslis; her sister-in-law Antoinette Massimo of Middlebury, and several nieces and nephews. Jennie was predeceased by her only sibling, John J. Massimo of Middlebury.

A Mass of Christian burial celebrating her life will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1, at Saint John of the Cross Roman Catholic Church in Middlebury. Burial at Lake Elise Cemetery will take place immediately after the Mass.  There are no calling hours. Chase Parkway Memorial/Albini Family Funeral Home at 430 Chase Parkway in Waterbury is assisting with her arrangements.
