Armed robber hits Straits Turnpike businesses

Middlebury Police Chief Fran Dabbo reported Middlebury Police received a report that an armed robbery had just occurred at the Dunkin’ Donuts and the Mobil gas station at 750 Straits Turnpike in Middlebury Friday, Dec. 8, at 10:09 a.m. The Dunkin’ Donuts is inside the gas station.

Officer Fred Marcantonio was across the street assisting a stuck motorist when a clerk from one of the businesses that was robbed ran across Route 63 (Straits Turnpike) to inform him of the robberies. She said a white male entered the gas station and displayed a silver-colored handgun and demanded money.

She described the robber as being over 6′ tall, slim, scruffy beard, salt and pepper hair, wearing a blue hoodie and a red ball cap. Officer Marcantonio attempted to apprehend the suspect but he had already left the area.

The suspect was later identified as Zachary Provost, 33, of an unknown Hartford address. He made off with approximately $300 from Dunkin’ Donuts and approximately $500 from the Mobil station. There were no injuries.

Shortly after the robberies in Middlebury Middlebury Police learned Provost traveled to Thomaston and allegedly robbed a bank there. Reportedly the towns of Avon and Putnam are preparing arrest warrants for Provost for robberies that occurred in those towns.
