Whiskers Pet Rescue of Southbury will celebrate its second anniversary with a fundraiser Saturday, May 5, from 12 to 4 p.m. in the Bennett Square Parking lot at 134 Main St. S. in Southbury. This is a timely event for the rescue since, in addition to having placed some 500 cats and kittens in its first two years of operation, it was asked to help with cats left in a foreclosed home.

A tenant in the multifamily home had left behind 18 unaltered male and female cats. Undaunted by the numbers or the conditions in the home, volunteers safely removed all 18 cats, some of them staying with Whiskers and some going to other rescues that kindly took them in. Now funds are needed to pay for neutering and spaying these cats before they go to their forever homes. In addition to money, food and litter donations are always welcome as are white kitchen-size garbage bags and paper towels.

Adoptable cats and kittens from Whiskers will be at the celebration, as will dogs and puppies from TLC Sweet Souls Rescue of Newtown. Reduced adoption fees are being offered to folks who attend the celebration and submit their applications by Sunday, May 6.

Girl Scouts will sell handmade items at the celebration and donate the proceeds to Whiskers. The event also will feature a bake sale, tag sale and raffle.

Whiskers Pet Rescue is open Tuesday to Sunday from noon to 3 p.m. and is closed Monday. Their website says opening the Southbury site was truly a dream come true. It gave them the ability to rescue and provide a safe, loving, temporary home for many more cats in the community. In the first three months the center was open, they adopted out over 75 cats and small animals into wonderful forever homes.

Small animals? Yes, Whiskers Pet Rescue is also a PetSmart Charities Adoption Partner. They often have rabbits, guinea pigs, and other small animals available for adoption at PetSmart.
