The Army Corps of Engineers announced Thursday, June 28, that on Friday, June 29, it will temporarily close the swimming area at Hop Brook Lake on Route 63 in Middlebury until further notice. The closure is the result of water quality testing that indicates bacteria levels in the lake exceed Connecticut standards.
Also, the nearly 2.31 inches of heavy rainfall and run-off received the morning of June 28 caused additional water quality problems, so retesting will not occur until early
next week. Once retest results are satisfactory, the beach will reopen.
The remainder of the park at Hop Brook Lake will remain open daily as usual for picnicking, hiking, and other recreational activities. Only the swimming area has been temporarily closed.
