I recently meandered over to Naugatuck to check out the Freihofer Bakery Outlet. It’s a place I often drive by, but it hasn’t been a regular stop for me. Now it will be. I can’t pass up saving so much money on baked goods.
I walked out with just three of the many items on the store shelves, but I saved more than 75 percent of the price I would have paid in a grocery store. I paid $3 for $13.97 worth of baked goods.
I got a 24-oz. loaf of Arnold 12-grain bread, regularly $4.49; a package of 100-percent whole wheat Thomas’ English muffins, regularly $4.49; and a Boboli pizza crust, regularly $4.99.
The expiration dates weren’t bad either – six days after purchase for the bread, two days after purchase for the English muffins and the day of purchase for the pizza crust. Not that the expiration dates mattered to me; baked goods freeze well, and the pizza crust and English muffins went straight into the freezer. The pizza crust usually costs more, but on its expiration date it joins the goods sold for three for $3, mix and match.
Most items in the store sell for that price. In addition to a huge assortment of breads, the English muffins and pizza crust, you will find Entenmann’s products at two for $5, Moon Pies, pizzelle, Stauffer’s Animal Crackers, peanut butter crackers, pretzels, cheese balls, muffins, bagels, soup mixes, jams, jellies, spices, and chips.
The outlet at 1041 New Haven Road (on your right before you get to Walmart) is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 6 pm. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
TIPS: The store gets new goods in every day but Wednesday and Sunday. Also, it is bag-free, so bring your own bag.
