Former longtime Middlebury resident

Mr. Walter K. Ahearn Jr., 87, formerly a longtime resident of Middlebury, Conn., passed away in Venice Hospital in Florida after a short illness on Feb. 12, 2019. He was born in Waterbury, Conn., June 19, 1931, the son of the late Walter K. Ahearn Sr. and Alice (Quinlain) Ahearn. He was predeceased by his wife, Irene (Tucker) Ahearn.

Walter graduated from Wilby High School and attended Central Connecticut State College. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and after continued to serve in the Army National Guard. Walter was active in the Town of Middlebury and was instrumental in forming the girls’ softball and basketball leagues in addition to coaching for several years. He also served on the Middlebury Parks and Recreation Committee among other town committees. He was a member of the Middlebury Lions Club and served as a district governor. He enjoyed the game of bridge and was a Junior Bridge Master and taught the game for several years in both Middlebury and North Port. In addition, he was very active in the Catholic Church he so loved. He served on the Parish Council at St. John of the Cross Church and as an usher and Eucharistic Minister at both St. John of the Cross in Middlebury and San Pedro Catholic Church in North Port, Fla.

Walter loved his family and is survived by his four children, Kimberly (William) Porter of Reinholds, Pa.; Karen (Howard) Schneider of Littleton, Mass.; Kathryn (Andrew) Birecki of Andover, Mass.; and David Ahearn of Middlebury, Conn., and 11 grandchildren, Kacey Schneider, Jessica (Wallis) Osborn, Jason (Becky) Schneider, Lauren (William) Hickman, Emily (Tom) Neff, Daniel Schneider, Michael Birecki, Ryan Ahearn, Connor Ahearn, Mackenzie Ahearn and Kaitlynn Ahearn and six great-grandchildren, Bailey Neff, Taft Osborn, Jupiter Rae Ahearn, Finley Hickman, Matthew Schneider and August Osborn; one sister, Nancy (John) Nori of Milford, Conn. and a sister-in-law, Marilyn (Tucker) Sheldon of Wallingford, Conn.

Visiting hours will be Tuesday, Feb. 19, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Munson-Lovetere Funeral Home at 235 Main St. N. in Southbury. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Wednesday, Feb. 20, at 10 a.m at St John of the Cross Church at 1263 West St. in Middlebury, Conn. UPDATE Feb. 17, 2019 to correct the name of Mr. Ahearn’s high school. He graduated from Wilby High School.
