The Hollywood musical, “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” (1954), will be shown as part of the Someday Cinema Series at the Edmond Town Hall at 45 Main St. in Newtown Sunday, April 7, with screenings at 1, 4 and 7 p.m. Tickets are $3, and the 1 p.m. matinee will be shown with subtitles for the benefit of the hearing impaired.
The Persnickety Bride, the film’s sponsor, will present short bridal shows at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., immediately followed by the film. The shows will highlight a small collection of wedding dresses from the Lillian West, Justin Alexander, Paloma Blanca, and Lea Ann Belter lines. Each give interpretations of a rustic, outdoorsy, elegant country wedding with a contemporary spin. The sponsor and contributors Floral Design by Melissa and Beth Zink Photography will present lobby displays.
After the original showing of the film in November 2018 was interrupted by an early winter storm interrupted the film’s evening show, series coordinator Jennifer Rogers was amazed at the public response. “Not only did people call the Edmond Town Hall on that day asking for the film to be shown another time, but requests came to me as well by email, from Facebook, and in person, too. It’s nice to know we can give people what they want, finally.”
Discussing the film, the Washington Post’s critic, Richard L. Coe, alliteratively asserted: “Dandy dancing, singable songs and the ozone of originality make ‘Seven Brides for Seven Brothers’ the niftiest musical I’ve seen in months.” (August 21, 1954)
Costume designer Walter Plunkett designed the dresses worn by the female cast from second-hand quilts. Although the brides in the film are married in those dresses, a mini-bridal show on Sunday will explore what they could wear in 2019.
The May 5 film will be “Mother” (1996), starting Albert Brooks and Debbie Reynolds. Visit tiny.cc/2019somedaycinema for complete details of the entire season.
