Sister Mary Elizabeth Fox, CND, died March 7 at the Lourdes Health Center in Wilton after a long illness.

Mary was born Nov. 20, 1941, in Waterbury, a beloved daughter of William and Josephine (Verrastro) Fox.

She graduated from St. Margaret’s Grammar School and Waterbury Catholic High. After graduation, she entered the Congregation of Notre Dame and was a member for 57 years. Following her novitiate, she graduated from Notre Dame College of Staten Island, Columbia University, and City University of New York, where she received her doctorate in mathematics.

Mary spent many years teaching math on both the college and high school levels, first at Notre Dame College of Staten Island, then at Notre Dame Academy of Staten Island, and Stamford Catholic High.

Returning to Waterbury, she tutored youth in the south end of the city.

She was a talented artist and worked in everything from oils to pen and ink.

She enjoyed her yearly vacation at the Congregation’s home in Quonochontaug, R.I.

At St. Cecilia Parish in Stamford, Mary led a group in Lexio Divina and began and mentored two groups of associates in the Congregation. In later years she was a cherished spiritual director for both laity and religious.

Besides her sisters in the Congregation of Notre Dame she will be greatly missed by her brother, Peter F. Fox and his wife, Barbara, and her sister, Regina Kotchian and her husband, John, of Middlebury. She kept a special place in her heart for her nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, and kept up to date on all their lives. Mary also leaves many cousins who mourn her loss.

She was a very holy soul whose life was devoted to living the Gospels.

The family is certain their dear sister Mary will continue to pray for them until they are reunited with her. To her, they say, “God bless you Mary. May the angels keep you and we love you very much!”
