Peter David Armstrong of New Preston, Connecticut, died Sept. 25 at Yale New Haven Hospital after a months-long illness caused by the extremely rare, tick-borne Powassan virus. Peter was born Sept. 7, 1947, in Nyack, New York to Jesse John and Katherine Armstrong (Felt).
Following a long career in business systems development and management, including stints with Mathematica Policy Research and Mathematica Products Group, Prudential Insurance and IBM in various locations, he was elected to the town zoning commission in Washington, Connecticut in 2017. He also served as treasurer of the First Congregational Church of Washington, chaired the Washington Democratic Town Committee, and was on the Washington Planning Committee’s Sustainability Subcommittee and the Washington Environmental Council.
Peter graduated from the University of Illinois in 1969 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history. He received a master’s degree in urban affairs from the University of Colorado, and an MBA from the Stern School of Business in 1996. Known for his gentle, quiet manner and thoughtful consideration for all, Peter loved music and dance and walking his big husky-akitas, but above all his wonderful family. Peter is survived by his wife, Henrietta Small, of New Preston; a daughter, Amanda (Lizzy), and a son, Paul, of Los Angeles; and nine siblings: Michael (Liz Schevtchuk) of Cold Spring, New York; Laurence (Judy Steffek) of Weyerhaeuser, Wisconsin; James of Will County, Illinois; Shawn of Park Forest, Illinois; Rebecca (Charles Gaynor) of Bel Aire, Kansas; Gwendolyn Blossom (Steve) of Wilmette, Illinois; Anthony (Yoriko Fujita) of New York City; Benjamin of Park Forest, Illinois; and Ethan (Jackie) of Steger, Illinois; as well as many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Peter’s life will be held Saturday, Oct. 19, 2019, at 2 p.m. at the First Congregational Church of Washington at 6 Kirby Road in Washington.
