Loving mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother
Nancy Miller Richardson, 92, a long-time resident of Middlebury, passed away peacefully Jan. 31 at her home in Woodside Heights, surrounded by her family.
Nancy was born on April 18, 1927, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, a daughter of the late Joseph Buckingham and Mildred Prescott Miller. She grew up in Belmont, Massachusetts, and after graduating from Belmont High School her adventurous spirit led her to summer jobs on Nantucket Island and a three-month tour of Europe with her sister Ruth.
Nancy moved to Middlebury in early 1961 to raise her four boys while working as a secretary at IBEW Local 660 and Craftsmen Litho in Waterbury. She retired from the Lutheran Home in Southbury after many years of service. She was a long-time active member of the Middlebury Congregational Church, where she served as secretary to the Board of Trustees and the church historian.
Nancy was an avid traveler who cruised the North Atlantic, Cape Horn, Panama Canal, Alaska, and the Mediterranean by boat. When she wasn’t traveling, she was on the go with friends who shared her interests in hiking, biking, cross-country skiing (her favorite outdoor activity), The Waterbury Symphony, or weekly bridge games. She was a “regular” at the MRA, the town beach on Lake Quassapaug, where she had been swimming laps during the summer months for more than 50 years.
She is predeceased by her brother, Robert Miller; sister, Ruth Ferguson; her stepmother, Dorothy Miller; her former husband, Robert Whitney Richardson; and her long-time companion, Robert C. Utenner.
Nancy is survived by her sister Janet (Ian) McKee of Seattle, Washington; and by her four sons, Robert Richardson of Southbury; Scott Richardson and spouse, Anita Sandberg, of Upton, Massachusetts; Bruce Richardson and spouse, Jami, of Middlebury; and Peter Richardson and partner, Judy Richardson, of Denver, Colorado; 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank her caregiver, Jellian Nckayle, for her kindness and attentive care.
Memorial donations may be sent in her honor to The Charles P. Luckey Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund, Middlebury Congregational Church, 1242 Whittemore Road, Middlebury, CT 06762
A private service and burial will be held at Wildwood Cemetery in Winchester, Massachusetts. Brookside Memorial/The Albini Family Funeral Home & Crematory at 200 Benson Road in Middlebury has been entrusted with the arrangements.
