Loving husband, father and grandfather

Carl J. Niedmann, 81, of Middlebury, passed away peacefully at his home on Feb. 19, 2020, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved widower of Grace M. (Gauya) Niedmann, his wife of almost 60 years before her passing less than one month ago.

Carl was born May 17, 1938, in Waterbury, Connecticut, son of the late Carl E. and Mary (Luddy) Niedmann. He was a graduate of Crosby High School, class of 1956. Carl proudly served in the United States Army as an infantryman after high school, and subsequently remained in the Army National Guard.

He served as a police officer for the City of Waterbury under the Bergin Administration and was notably chosen to serve guard duty for President John F. Kennedy during his campaign stop in Waterbury. Carl spent most of his career, 45 years, in the insurance industry as an agent with Prudential Insurance and Blue Cross of Connecticut. He later became owner of Niedmann Health Services.

Carl was an accomplished baseball player, roaming centerfield for teams in the highly competitive Waterbury Twilight and the Public Park leagues, while others his age were still playing high school baseball. A dedicated family man, he was a little league coach in Middlebury and a youth basketball coach for both sons. Carl was a rabid lifelong Boston Red Sox fan, who could always be found cheering them on from his favorite recliner every year from April through September.

He leaves his two sons, Eric Niedmann and his wife, Beth, of Harwinton and Carl Niedmann of Middlebury and his ex-wife, Michele, of Durham. Carl also leaves behind his sisters, Laura LaChance of Delaware, Patricia Place of Watertown, and Rosemary Quadrato of Watertown, and his grandchildren, Sarah Skrelja, Erik Niedmann Jr., Kaitlin Niedmann, Ryan Niedmann, Connor Niedmann and Cole Niedmann.

His funeral will be Saturday, Feb. 22, at 10 a.m. at the Brookside Memorial/The Albini Family Funeral Home & Crematory at 200 Benson Road in Middlebury followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Saint John of the Cross Church in Middlebury.
