Tax bills go out in June

Middlebury Tax Collector Brenda Carter said real estate, personal property, and motor vehicle tax bills will be mailed to taxpayers in June and will be due July 1, 2020. Sewer usage fees or sewer/water assessment bills will be sent out in July and will be due August 1, 2020.

This year, the town will offer a lower interest rate on late payments on real estate, personal property and motor vehicle taxes in an attempt to help taxpayers who have been hit hard financially by the pandemic. If a financial hardship will affect your ability to pay your taxes by the due date, you are encouraged to contact Carter and discussion your situation with her.

Taxes will be higher this year because the mil rate has increased to 35.1 from 33.4, a 5% increase. This means taxes on a home assessed at $200,000 will increase to $7,020 from their current $6,680, a $340 increase.

To ease the taxpayer burden, the town adopted a lower interest program proposed by the State of Connecticut. This program allows the Town of Middlebury to offer a lower interest rate for real estate, personal property, and motor vehicle tax bills that become due on July 1, 2020 for three months from the date that they become due and payable.

The effect of this program is that any taxpayer who pays their July installment amount due after August 3, 2020, will be charged 0.25% per month interest from the original due date instead of the statutory 1.5% per month formerly in effect. The last day to take advantage of this lower interest will be September 30, 2020. Interest on any July installment amount due that remains unpaid as of October 1, 2020, will be charged 1.5% per month interest back to July 1, 2020.

Making payments can be done in any of several ways. Town Hall remains closed to the public but both the Tax Collector and Assessor are available by phone. Appointments can be made, but they need to be made in advance. Social distancing guidelines need to be followed.

Taxpayers can view, pay and print receipts on the home page of the town website at www.middlebury-ct.org. ACH payments can be made at a minimal charge of $0.95. There is an additional fee for credit card payment.

Payments can be mailed to the address listed on your tax bill.

Payments can be left in a secure lock box at Town Hall for processing. If you pay this way and would like to have a receipt mailed to you, please include a self-addressed stamped envelope with your payment and a receipt will be mailed back to you for your records.

If you have any questions, please contact the Tax Collector at 203-758-1373 or email bcarter@middlebury-ct.org.
