Did you know grass clippings on the road can cause a motorcycle or bicycle accident? A reader contacted us and asked us to let people know how dangerous grass clippings on the road are to motorcycle and bicycle riders. He’s concerned because he is a motorcycle rider himself and he said he’s seen many people shooting lawn clippings out into the road when they mow their grass.
Unfortunately, those clippings (along with loose dirt, sand and leaves) are a hazard for motorcyclists and bicyclists traveling down the road. They can lose traction on these surfaces much like a car can lose traction on an icy surface. When that happens, motorcycles and bicycles usually end up on the pavement, and the rider can be injured seriously.
When you mow your grass, please plan your mowing path so the grass near the road shoots back into your yard and not onto the road. Help your friends and neighbors by making the roads safer for them.
