Q: I recently discovered the show “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” on Netflix and have been really impressed with the cast’s singing on the show. I read that they are all Broadway stars. Will it be returning with new episodes? – W.W.
A: The award-winning musical comedy “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” actually started out on the CW network, not Netflix, running from 2015 through 2019. Its reruns are airing on Netflix, but the series has concluded. It was the brainchild of its star, Rachel Bloom, and Aline Brosh McKenna, who wrote the screenplay for “The Devil Wears Prada.” Bloom was an improv actress who gained a following with some funny videos online before playing Rebecca Bunch, an ambitious Manhattan attorney who ups and moves to a small Southern California town to chase after an old fling.
You are correct in that its cast collectively has the voice of an angel. Donna Lynne Champlin, who plays Bloom’s co-worker and friend on “Crazy Ex,” earned rave reviews for her role in the Broadway revival of “Sweeney Todd,” and Santino Fontana starred in “Tootsie” on Broadway and also voiced Prince Hans in the animated blockbuster “Frozen.”
The hilarious songs written for the show were created by Bloom in collaboration with Jack Dolgen and Fountains of Wayne’s Adam Schlesinger.
Q: Is it true that Michael Keaton is returning as Batman? I thought Robert Pattinson was next to play the Caped Crusader? – Y.U.
A: It’s hard to keep track of all the Marvel projects, let alone all the upcoming ones based on DC Comics characters, but from what I can gather, Pattinson and the rumors about Keaton as Batman are for two different films.
Robert Pattinson, 34, will play Bruce Wayne in the upcoming movie titled simply “The Batman” and directed by Matt Reeves. It has an expected October 2021 release date. As for Michael Keaton, 68, who starred in Tim Burton’s “Batman” in the early ’90s, he’s rumored to be making an appearance as his iconic character in “The Flash,” the motion picture, not to be confused with the CW series of the same name. Talks are supposedly in the early stages with Keaton though.
Q: I was watching the miniseries “Little Fires Everywhere” on Hulu and recognized the actress who plays Madeline from the series “Sleepy Hollow,” which I loved. I never understood why her character was killed off on “Sleepy” when she was so integral to the show. – I.R.
A: Nicole Beharie is the actress you’re inquiring about, and her exit from Fox’s “Sleepy Hollow” was indeed an abrupt one – and not of her choosing. According to EOnline.com, she and one of her co-stars came down with the same infection called C. difficile, but she states that she had to keep filming while he was given permission to recuperate. After being physically unable to keep up her usual filming pace, she states that she was labeled difficult and unprofessional, and written out of the show.
Fortunately, Beharie’s career has recovered, as you’ve seen with “Little Fires,” and she’s also starring in the new movie “Miss Juneteenth.”
