Susie Finkbeiner’s “Stories That Bind Us” is set in the 1960s in LaFontaine, Michigan, when times seemed simpler but families had the same problems as today, including mental illness and race relations. Betty Sweet becomes a widow at age 40. As she is dealing with this loss, her sister Clara, who she has not seen in years, turns up on her door step with her young son, Hugo. When Clara enters a sanitarium for depression, Betty and Hugo form a forever relationship through the telling of stories and love, healing them both.

Pop culture journalist, Joe Berkowitz’s obsessive relation to cheese is revealed in his new book “American Cheese: An Indulgent Odyssey Through the Artisan Cheese World.” After attending an artisan cheese sampling in New York City, Berkowitz stumbles headlong into the hidden world of artisan cheeses. He embarks on a yearlong journey to explore cheese’s subculture and its place in society. From New York City’s famous Murray’s Cheese Shop to cheese caves in Paris and the World Cheese Awards, his adventure endures. Berkowitz unexpectedly discovers the world’s passionate cheese makers and their varied delicious products.

Garth Nix’s new teen book, “The Left-Handed Booksellers of London,” combines alternate history, magical booksellers and quests. Set in a slightly altered London in 1983, Sarah Arkshaw has just begun her search for her father when her only lead is turned into dust by Merlin, a left-handed bookseller who fights Old World magical beings that threaten the modern world. Merlin and his sister Vivien are searching for the Old World entity that used ordinary criminals to kill their mother. As the two quests begin to overlap, Sarah, Merlin and Vivien must uncover who, or what, Sarah’s father was as the Old World dangerously begins to break into the modern world.

“When Winter Comes” by Aimee M. Bissonett is a charming story for children ages 5 to 6 that takes you out into the snowy landscape of winter. Through the illustrations, join a family on snowshoes as they explore the animals that wander and play in the winter. Who lives in the hollow log? Where do the turtles go? Do the fish swim under the ice? “When Winter Comes” is a wonderful introduction to winter and hibernation.

Jan Brett’s newest book, “Cozy,” is for ages 5 and up. Cozy is the softest musk ox in Alaska. When a storm hits while Cozy is away from his herd he feels very lonely, but not for long. One by one other animals that are looking to stay warm realize how warm and cozy Cozy really is. Many animals take shelter under his fur and Cozy must add house rules for them to follow for everyone to be safe and happy. Spring comes and everyone leaves for their summer homes promising to get cozy with Cozy next year. Cozy is reunited with his own family that missed him very much.
