Troop 6 in Middlebury, one of the first female Boy Scouts of America troops in Connecticut, is celebrating its first Eagle Scout Project. Maggie Bellemare of Waterbury decided to make blankets for clients served by Safe Haven of Greater Waterbury. Bellemare said more than 50 people volunteered to help make blankets during a blanket-making day at Sacred Heart High School in Waterbury.
Teams worked at tables spread out in the school’s gymnasium, completing 75 blankets that day. Bellemare’s goal is to make 150 blankets, and she said 100 had been completed as of May 25.
In addition to making blankets, Bellemare’s Eagle Scout team held a work day at Safe Haven and installed flooring in two rooms and two hallways. On Memorial Day weekend, the team planned to paint three rooms and put down flooring in two remaining rooms.
Bellemare is a Life Scout and Junior Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 6 in Middlebury and president of Crew 2 in Naugatuck, Connecticut. As one of the first Eagle candidates in the Greater Waterbury area, she chose as her project working with Safe Haven of Greater Waterbury Inc., an emergency shelter that offers free comprehensive support services to victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.
