Loving husband, father and grandfather

Mr. Luigi “Lou” Perugini, 81, a lifelong resident of Middlebury, Connecticut, passed away on Friday, May 27, 2022, at Yale New Haven Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Waterbury CT on January 24, 1941, to the late Giuseppe and Concetta (Guerrera) Perugini. He was the beloved husband of Judy (Robinson) Perugini.

Lou attended Kaynor Technical High School where he studied to be a tool and die maker. After graduation Lou served in the U.S. Army Reserve. He served his apprenticeship at Princeton Knitting Mills and Anaconda American Brass before taking a job as a journeyman machinist at Timex, where he worked for 27 years until his retirement. After retirement Lou worked part time for Land Jet as a bus driver for several years, where he loved driving his many friends to the casinos.

Lou was a member of the Naugatuck Fish & Game Club, the Pontelandolfo Community Club, and was a communicant of Saint John of Cross Church. He served as a youth softball coach in Middlebury for many years and was famous for taking kids to Johnny’s Dairy Bar for a sundae if they hit a home run. Lou was an avid golfer, gardener, hunter, fisherman, and handyman. There wasn’t anything he couldn’t fix, except our broken hearts at his loss. One of his greatest passions was serving his community as a volunteer firefighter/EMT. Lou joined the Middlebury Volunteer Fire Department in the junior corps (Civil Defense) in 1954. He became a regular firefighter in 1960 and transitioned to veteran firefighter status in 1992. Although his health didn’t allow him to be an active firefighter in his later years, he proudly displayed the MVFD plate on the front of his car at all times.

Lou was preceded in death by his parents, his grandmother, Felicia (Longo) Guerrera; his sister, Mary (Perugini) LaPorta; his daughter, Lorilee (Perugini) Niles; and his nephew, Joseph Viega, all of whom he dearly loved.

Lou is survived by his wife of 61 years, Judy, to whom he was singularly devoted; his sister, Elena (Perugini) Viega; his son, Louis Perugini and his wife, Lee-Ann, of Thomaston; his daughter, Louann Perugini and her husband, Scott Tedder, of Middlebury; his son, Robert Perugini and his wife, Sonia, of Middlebury; his grandchildren David Pittari and his wife, Cara; Dan Pittari; Tyler Niles; Louis Perugini Jr.; Grace Perugini; and Sofia Perugini; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours will be held at Brookside Memorial/The Albini Family Funeral Home at 200 Benson Road in Middlebury on Friday, June 3, from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be celebrated Friday to close the calling hours at 7 p.m. Interment will be private and held at a later date at the Middlebury Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest next to his beloved daughter and parents.
