“Something From Tiffany’s” (PG) – Could the iconic rom-com era (not looking at you, Netflix) make a comeback? This new Prime Original movie produced by Reese Witherspoon has a taste of classic rom-coms like “The Holiday” (2006) that we’ve all come to know and love over the years. Zoey Deutch plays Rachel Meyer, a woman who receives a Tiffany’s engagement ring from her boyfriend, Gary (Ray Nicholson). Gary, who in reality just purchased earrings for her, realizes his gift was swapped with another man’s. In the process of swapping the gifts back with Ethan, the rightful owner of the ring, the accidental gift-swapping coincidentally leads to a fated attraction between Rachel and Ethan. Out now. “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” (PG) – Academy-Award-winning director Guillermo del Toro first announced his reimagining of the children’s fantasy story “Pinocchio” back in 2008. After a long-winding road leading up to its 2022 release, the film, starring Ewan McGregor, Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett and more, is now out on streaming. For his reimagining, del Toro uses stop-motion animation, which gives the characters a much more fantastical look, unlike the soft, cartoony animation of Disney’s “Pinocchio.” So far, the critics have given positive reviews, no doubt due to the emotional, character-based storytelling that accompanies del Toro’s films (“The Shape of Water” and “Pan’s Labyrinth”) and makes them so profound. (Netflix)
“Ticket to Paradise” (PG-13) – A new rom-com starring George Clooney, Julia Roberts and Kaitlyn Dever just hit streaming platforms after its theatrical release. This is not Clooney and Roberts’ first rodeo, as the pair have co-starred in the “Ocean’s” trilogy and even a thriller called “Money Monster” (2016). They play David and Georgia Cotton, respectively, who were formerly married and cannot stand the sight of each other. But the Cottons reunite when they find out their daughter, Lily, is potentially marrying a man she just met. Afraid that Lily is only going to repeat the same mistakes that led to their demise, the Cottons are determined to sabotage the wedding. (Peacock)
“The Banshees of Inisherin” (R) – Taking place in 1923 near the end of the Irish Civil War, two friends, Padraic (Colin Farrell) and Colm (Brendan Gleeson), reach an impasse in their longtime friendship when Colm suddenly stops talking to Padraic. After Padraic’s constant attempts to speak with Colm and mend the relationship, Colm threatens to start cutting off his own fingers and gift them to Padraic every time he continues to bother him. Barry Keoghan (“Dunkirk”) also stars in this gritty, metaphorical Irish film that won Farrell the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the 79th Venice International Film Festival. Out Dec. 13. (HBO Max)
