Middlebury Police Officer Daniel Gillotti apprehended a suspected burglar wanted by Yale New Haven Police Friday, January 27. Gillotti received a Rekor alert at 2:55 p.m. advising him a vehicle wanted by the Yale New Haven police was in Middlebury. Based on the information given to him, he checked for the vehicle in the Cumberland Farms parking lot and other places in the area. The vehicle wasn’t there.

At 3:35 p.m., he received a second Rekor alert on the same vehicle. He happened to be in the immediate area and saw the vehicle turn into the Cumberland Farms parking lot.

Activating his emergency lights, he pulled behind the vehicle. Checking with Northwest Dispatch on the operator, Omar Mercado, 50, of Waterbury, Gillotti learned there was an active New Haven warrant on him for suspected second degree burglary.

After patting him down and finding no contraband or weapons on him, Gillotti transported him to the Middlebury Police Station, where he was placed in a holding cell. Yale New Haven Police arrived a short time later and transported Mercado to their department.
