Devoted wife, mother and grandmother
Mary Ellen Browne, 81, of Middlebury, passed away unexpectedly at Waterbury Hospital surrounded by the love and comfort of her family on Monday, March 20, 2023. She was the beloved wife of Thomas Browne for 58 years.
Mary Ellen was born September 11, 1941, in Waterbury, Connecticut, the daughter of the late John and Sarah (Winters) McGill. She was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School and attended Madonna College in Michigan.
As a loving wife, mother and grandmother, she dedicated herself to raising her family in Middlebury. Mary Ellen enjoyed her time working for the Town of Middlebury Parks and Recreation Department. As a CNA, she cared for many seniors in their homes and at East Hill Woods in Southbury. Prior to retiring, she worked at St. Mary’s Hospital in the Same Day Surgery Department.
Some of Mary Ellen’s most cherished memories are of summer vacations on Cape Cod with her husband, children and grandchildren. Over the years she enjoyed dances at the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Middlebury Mixers Bowling League, her monthly card games “with the girls” and the Sacred Heart High School Class of ‘59 gatherings. Mary Ellen was a strong woman of faith and was a long-time parishioner of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception Church in Waterbury.
Left to honor her legacy and cherish her memory, besides her husband, are her children; Eileen Kohli and her husband, Neeraj, of Natick, Massachusetts; Noreen Browne of West Dennis, Massachusetts; Thomas Browne and his wife, Michelle Mulvena, of Boxford, Massachusetts; and Brendan Browne and his wife, Carolanne, of Middlebury, Connecticut. Mary Ellen was blessed with six adoring grandchildren: Megan, Alana, Devin, Grace, Madeleine, and Nora.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 29, 2023, at 10 a.m. at The Basilica of the Immaculate Conception Church in Waterbury. Those planning to attend are asked to meet directly at the church. There are no calling hours. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Casey’s Eastside Memorial Funeral Home and Cremation Care at 1987 East Main St. in Waterbury, Connecticut has been honored to care for the Browne Family during this difficult time.
