Earth Day is Saturday, April 22, and several Earth Day activities will be right here in Middlebury. An early morning bird walk comes first, followed by a hazardous household waste dropoff and a townwide cleanup event. Choose one or more of these activities to celebrate Earth Day this year.

Start the day with a bird walk around Lake Elise from 6:30 to 8 a.m. Meet at the main entrance on Long Meadow Road, across from Lake Elise Cemetery. Look for the sign marked “Largay Preserve.”

The walk will be led by Rob Buck and hosted by the Middlebury Land Trust. It should provide great opportunities to see and hear a wide variety of birds. Bring binoculars, and wear sturdy shoes. Please register for the walk by sending an email to mlt@middleburylandtrust.org.

If you have paints, cleaners and other chemicals you need to dispose of, you can follow the bird walk by dropping them off at the Household Hazardous Waste and Paint Collection Day from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Shepardson Community Center at 1172 Whittemore Road in Middlebury.

It is sponsored by the Naugatuck Valley Council of Governments and is free to residents of Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Bethlehem, Derby, Middlebury, Naugatuck, Oxford, Prospect, Seymour, Southbury, Thomaston, Waterbury, Watertown, Wolcott and Woodbury. There is no need to line up before 8 a.m. Proof of residency, such as a driver’s license, tax bill, or other identification, is required for entrance. For more information on what can be dropped off, see page 5 of the April Middlebury Bee-Intelligencer or look online at www.bee-news.com/2023/04/04/dispose-of-hazardous-waste .

Next, you can head over to Meadowview Park to participate in the townwide cleanup event from 10 a.m. to noon. Parks and Rec Staff will be at there to distribute town maps, trash bags and gloves. Choose any public town area to clean/collect trash. Call 203-758-2520 to schedule trash bag pick-up.

Enjoy an environmentally friendly, fun family activity while at the park. Children ages 3-10 are invited to plant a sunflower in a peat moss cup while supplies last.
