Unofficial November 7, 2023, election results show petitioning unaffiliated candidate Jennifer Mahr with 1,764 votes and Democratic candidate J. Paul Vance with 1,125 votes as the winners of the two seats on Middlebury’s Board of Selectmen. Republican candidate Elaine M. R. Strobel, an incumbent, got 1,010 votes while Republican Shannon Cavallo, a petitioning candidate, got 617 votes. These results mean two minority candidates will, for the first time ever, serve on the board with First Selectman Edward B. St. John, a Republican.
Another first is the election of Democrat Sally D. Romano to serve on the Region 15 Board of Education. She will be the first Democrat from Middlebury to serve on the BoE since 2011. Romano, with 1,346 votes, led the four candidates for two seats on the BoE. Republican Jeffrey D. Olsen earned the second seat with 1,312 votes. Incumbent John Jenusaitis, a Republican, earned 1,235 votes and Alison Kimble-Cusano earned 969 votes.
In other races, incumbent Town Treasurer Janine R. Bowler, a Republican, won reelection with 1,492 votes to 958 votes for the Democratic challenger, Linda D. Herrmann.
Cross-endorsed tax collector candidate Cindy R. Palomba brought in 967 Democratic votes, 1,422 Republican votes and 5 unknown votes.
The two candidates for the two full term positions on the Board of Finance, Democrat Joseph Drauss and Republican Vincent Cipriano, both incumbents, earned 1,069 and 1,765 votes, respectively.
Two candidates vied to fill one vacancy on the Board of Finance. Republican John Jenusaitis won with 1,450 votes to Francis L. Barton Jr.’s 1,011 votes.
For the Board of Assessment Appeals seat, Robert J. Flanagan Jr. won with 1,440 votes to Stephen Ferrucci III’s 982 votes.
Both candidates for Police Commission were voted in with Democrat Francis L. Barton Jr. getting 1,245 votes and Rita H. Smith getting 1,638 votes.
For the three seats on the Water Pollution Control Authority, the three Republicans beat the two Democrats with votes as follows: Republicans Ted Mannello (1,459), Paul Phillips (1,345) and Robert W. Smith (1,368) and Democrats Thomas Gilbertie (940) and Kristin Couture (992).
Both library trustee candidates were elected with Democrat Margaret A. Vance getting 1,455 votes and Republican John Moriarty getting 1,396 votes.
The one seat on the Pomperaug Valley Water Authority was won by Republican Brian D. Shaban with 1,416 votes to Democrat James A. Petrauskas’s 919 votes.
