Middlebury’s $13.04 million general fund (municipal) and $2.39 million capital expenses budgets were approved at the polls May 22. After the polls closed, a new mil rate, 32.58, was set at a joint meeting of the Board of Finance and the Board of Selectmen. It will take effect with the tax bills due July 1, 2024.
The new mil rate is .32 higher than the current 32.26 mil rate. For a property with an assessed (not appraised) value of $500,000, current taxes are $16,130. Taxes at the new mil rate will be $16,290, an increase of $160. Of that $16,290, the town would get $4,984.74 (30.6%) and Region 15 would get $11,305.26 (69.4%)
To calculate property taxes, multiply the property’s assessed value times the mil rate and then divide by 1,000. Property assessed values can be found at gis.vgsi.com/middleburyct/Search.aspx.
On May 22, 311 people voted for the municipal budget while 229 voted against it. The $2.39 million capital expenses budget passed with 304 votes for it and 233 votes against it. A total of 520 votes were cast by machine and 20 votes were cast by absentee ballots.
The original versions of both budgets were voted down by narrow margins at the May 8 referendum, with the general fund budget, then at $13.1 million, losing by 69 votes (577 against, 508 for) and the capital expenses budget, then at $2.49 million, losing by 43 votes (563 against, 520 for).
In contrast, the $87.17 million Regional School District 15 budget passed in Middlebury on May 8 with 645 voting for it and 444 voting against it. Middlebury taxpayers will pay $29.5 million of the Region 15 budget. Added to the $13.04 million municipal budget, the total bill for Middlebury taxpayers will be $42.6 million.
Updated May 24, 2024, to change all mil rates to the actual numbers rather than rounded off numbers, redo the calculations using the actual mil rate numbers, and to add information on the percentages of the example taxes that would go to the town and to Regional School District 15.
