A head-on collision on Rte. 64 near Quassy Amusement Park Wednesday, June 12, at 12:46 p.m. left a Naugatuck woman in the hospital and a Naugatuck man in jail. Middlebury Police report when they arrived, they found two heavily damaged vehicles in the road, both with heavy front end damage.
A man later identified as Jonathan Oneill-Kunkel, 26, of Naugatuck was standing next to a Ford F-250 pickup, rummaging through the passenger compartment. A 60-year-old Naugatuck woman whose name has not been released by police was entrapped in a Honda Pilot. She had sustained multiple serious injuries. The Middlebury Volunteer Fire Department extricated the woman so she could be transported to Waterbury Hospital. Oniell-Kunkel was evaluated by Middlebury EMS but denied any injuries and declined medical care.
Investigating Officer Terzigni, who is a Drug Recognition Expert, recognized Oneill-Kunkel’s behavior and physical signs as consistent with being under the influence of drugs. Oneill-Kunkel was taken into custody and field sobriety tests were conducted at police headquarters.
Based on the officer’s observations and field sobriety testing, Oneill-Kunkel was processed and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, second degree assault with a motor vehicle, possession of a controlled substance (cocaine) and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license. He was held on a $50,000 bond. Oneill-Kunkel was unable to post bond and was arraigned in Waterbury court. Still unable to post bond, at last report he was being held at New Haven Correctional Center.
The Naugatuck Valley Accident Reconstruction Team is conducting the accident investigation.
