Malcolm S. Todt, 79 of Middlebury, passed away suddenly Friday, June 14, 2024, at Hartford Hospital.
Malcolm was born in Newark, N.J. on March 18, 1945, a son of the late Carl William and Erma Elizabeth (Williams) Todt. Malcolm was the identical twin of the late Alan Hunter Todt and he often talked about how special being an identical twin was. He was also the younger brother of the late Carl William Todt, Jr. He grew up in Roselle Park, New Jersey.
Malcolm earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from The George Washington University and a master’s degree in business administration, magna cum laude, from Babson College.
Malcolm had a distinguished career as a financial executive. Following his graduation from Babson, he worked for Scovill Inc. from 1968 to 1975, in financial roles including the manager of cash and banking. He then worked for Insilco Corporation from 1975 to 1989, in financial positions, including vice president and treasurer. Following Insilco, Malcolm held financial leadership roles at Municipal Bond Investors Assurance Corporation and Welling International.
Throughout his career, Malcolm served on the boards of directors of Centerbank, Autoswage Products Inc., Amphenol Corporation, and Thermo-Conductor Services Inc. and was a member of the board of governors at Newington (Connecticut) Children’s Hospital
Malcolm was the first certified management accountant in the State of Connecticut, an achievement for which he was honored in 2012, and was a member of the Finance Executives Institute and the Institute of Management Accountants.
Malcolm was always recognized by friends and colleagues for his tremendous work ethic, discipline, and depth of knowledge.
Malcolm was extremely engaged in the community throughout his life and volunteered his time in many ways. He played drums, including in a jazz band and, more recently, with a friend at Middlebury Convalescent Home, where they played for the residents for many years. In addition to New Orleans jazz, he loved Doo-Wop music and would play it in every car ride. He volunteered at the Middlebury Fire Department and at the former church of his late brother, Carl Todt, in Andover, New Jersey. He was a devoted parishioner at Middlebury Congregational Church (MCC) and served as head usher for many years and up to the time of his death. He often volunteered his time for church events and services and was a member of MCC for over 50 years.
Malcolm leaves behind to cherish his memory his two children, Kiersten Elizabeth Todt and her partner, Roger William Cressey, of Arlington, Virginia, and Blair Williams Todt, Esq. and his wife, Lisa Muzio Todt, of Carmel, Indiana, and his devoted partner of 23 years, Mary Ann Mahoney of Manchester, Conn. He also leaves behind his four grandchildren, Noah Williams Coon, Haley Elizabeth Coon, Jackson Williams Todt, and Christian Blair Todt. In addition to immediate family, he is survived by his cousins and their families and the widows of his brothers.
Malcolm loved the water and was known for carrying a bathing suit in the trunk of his car at all times so that he would never miss an opportunity to go swimming at any time of year. He is perhaps most known in Middlebury for the canoe, with a lit Christmas tree, that he put on Fenn’s Pond during the holiday season. If you drove by his home in the summer, you would see a garden filled with vegetables and towering sunflowers, and, in the fall, a garden of pumpkins on which he had scored the names of his grandchildren. He treasured nature, the outdoors, and animals.
Malcolm loved diners and great food and hosting friends and family at his favorite restaurants, bakeries, and delis.
He was incredibly devoted to his grandchildren and opened his heart to all those who came into the family. He built lasting relationships throughout his life and was a loyal friend to so many. He was always genuinely interested in the lives and families of others and remembered the smallest, yet sometimes the most important, details of someone’s life. His generosity of spirit, kindness, and true interest in helping his community and those around him will be missed immensely.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 13, 2024, at 12 p.m. (noon) at Middlebury Congregational Church at 1242 Whittemore Road in Middlebury.
