CONCORD, Mass. (July 12, 2024) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District announced today that the swimming area at Hop Brook Lake in Middlebury, Conn., will remain closed until further notice.

The closure of the swimming area is a precautionary administrative action due to the possibility of the presence of cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae, in the lake water. Park Rangers are advising patrons not to touch the water and not to allow pets to enter or drink from the lake. If people or pets contact the water, visitors are strongly advised to wash the contacted area immediately with clean water.

The lake beach was originally closed July 3, 2024, when water quality testing indicated that bacteria levels in the lake exceeded Connecticut State Standards following heavy rainfall.

Once the combination of weekly bacteria tests and cyanobacteria tests indicate a favorable result, USACE will reopen the lake beach for swimming and recreation.

The majority of the Hop Brook Lake recreation area remains open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. for picnicking, hiking and other recreational activities.
