Library offers “College & Beyond” programs

The Woodbury Public Library is hosting a series of programs created for high school students, their families, and parents and grandparents planning for future expenses. The programs tackle the many questions that come with the next steps after high school. They will be offered Tuesday, July 30; Wednesday, July 31; Saturday, August 10; Tuesday, August 20; and Wednesday, August 21.

College: Getting There from Here will be offered on Tuesday, July 30, at 6 p.m. The idea of planning for the cost of college can be very daunting. Join Kristina J. Matwijec, a financial advisor from Edward Jones, to understand the total cost of going to college including tuition and fees, room and board, books and expenses, even travel costs and how to get started saving early. You’ll learn suggestions to prepare for your child’s future college costs.

College Planning: Should My Child Go to College or Trade School and How to Pay for It will be offered Wednesday, July 31, at 6 p.m. As the cost of higher education continues to rise, is it worth the investment? What are the benefits to community colleges or trade schools? What are the best ways to pay for continuing education? Join Alex Overkamp, a financial educator from the Association of Financial Educators, to talk about college planning that works for your family.

Why Connecticut state community college? Offered on Saturday, August 10, at 2 p.m.  and Wednesday, August 21, at 6:30 p.m., this program shares the changes to community colleges in Connecticut. Did you know Connecticut State offers a great, affordable path to higher learning? A student’s course of study can be full time or part time and, when coupled with the CSCU Transfer Ticket program, can result in the most affordable associate and bachelor’s degrees in the state! The Roadmap to College will be offered on Tuesday, August 20, at 6 p.m. Join Holly Franquet, The College Place Connecticut director specializing in student success and outreach at Housatonic Community College for “Roadmap to College,” a PowerPoint presentation that focuses on future education decisions. The talk for high school students and their families is offered in four sections and includes information on trade and career schools, insight on how education can change your life, and advice on choosing the right path for you. The talk also includes information on college costs and the next steps to get where you see your future going.
