The Middlebury First Selectman’s office released the following information explaining how residents can report damage from the August 18, 2024, storm:
Instructions for residents to report storm damage
For Middlebury residents affected by Flash Flooding on Sunday, August 18, 2024, the following guidance is provided by Emergency Management Director Chief Brett Kales:
- As a result of the historic flash flooding that occurred from the 1,000-year storm that dumped over 9 inches of rain in a matter of hours, the Town of Middlebury declared a State of Emergency on Sunday, August 18. The State of Connecticut then declared a State of Emergency on Monday, August 19, and President Biden authorized a FEMA disaster declaration on August 21.
- Middlebury businesses and residents should take the following steps to document and report damage estimates:
a. Identify damages caused by the event and create a damage inventory: this list could include structural damage, water heater and HVAC damage or loss, damages to personal possessions, exterior damage, vehicle damage, lost inventory, lost revenue due to business disruption, etc. List the damages and document this list with photo evidence.
b. Contact your insurance company to see if coverage is provided under your current policy. If you have coverage, you will not be eligible for assistance. If you are denied coverage, save any paperwork as proof of denial.
c. Submit your damage estimates through the Crisis Track Portal at crisistrack.juvare.com/public/CTDEMHS/request.html. Submit ALL damages at this time: the determination for what qualifies and doesn’t will be made later. Losses to secondary homes or apartment buildings should be assessed as business losses. Specifically note if a home is inaccessible due to the event.
d. EMD Director Brett Kales has a list of 47 homes that had contact with the Fire Department during the storm. If you did not contact the MVFD for assistance during the storm but still had damage, please call 203-577-4036 and report your address.
e. The FEMA site is not currently open for individual and small business claims, and authorization will move from the hardest affected areas to the least.
