Today we honor the memory of those who lost their lives during the terrorist attack on the United States 23 years ago, on September 11, 2001. We honor the memory of those who boarded airplanes trusting they would safely arrive at their destinations; those who left their homes and families for another work day, expecting they would return that evening; and all the brave first responders who gave their lives trying to save lives. We shall never forget them. Nor shall we forget those who have died in the years since as a result of their exposure to toxic substances at the scene of the attack.

We are aware of one nearby memorial event today. Holy Cross High School in Waterbury and the City of Waterbury will hold the second annual 9/11 Memorial Tribute at Holy Cross High School today, Wednesday, September 11, beginning with a reception in the main lobby at 6:30 p.m. and the tribute at 7 p.m. in the Blasius Family Auditorium. This event will honor the memory of Father Francis E. Grogan, C.S.C., a cherished former Holy Cross family member, and the Waterbury area 9/11 victims.

The evening will include a remembrance ceremony featuring tributes from family and friends of 9/11 victims. Special guests will be Waterbury Mayor Paul K. Pernerewski, Police Pipes & Drums of Waterbury, Waterbury Police Color Guard and Fire Color Guard, and Waterbury first responders. Holy Cross High School is at 587 Oronoke Road in Waterbury.
