Loving husband, father, and grandfather
Raymond G. Shortt, 73, of Middlebury, entered into the gates of Heaven on Friday December 13, 2024, at St. Mary’s Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was the devoted husband of Dolores (Daloisio) Shortt.
Ray was born in Waterbury on July 27, 1951, son of the late Robert and Dorothy (Pirro) Shortt. He graduated from Naugatuck High School Class of 1969. He worked as an educator for the City of Waterbury Department of Education for 38 years. He started his career as a teacher at Wilby High School for the majority of his career where he also was the head coach of the varsity football team. He later transferred to Crosby High School where he was the vice-principal. After retiring from the city, he went on to work at Porter & Chester Institute and was currently an admissions counselor for IMTI (Industrial Management Training Institute).
He was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus Pinta Council #5 in Wallingford, where he served proudly as Grand Knight for two years. He was a lifetime member of the Waterbury BPO Elks Lodge 265. He was an avid sports enthusiast, especially football and baseball. He enjoyed traveling and most importantly spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a member of the Waterbury Retired Teachers Association and the State of Connecticut Teacher’s Association.
Besides his wife, Dolores, of 41 years, he leaves to honor and cherish his memory two daughters, Amanda Gurzynski and her husband US Navy Lieutenant William Gurzynski of Middlebury and Katia M. Shortt and her fiancé Robert Nagy of Wallingford; three grandchildren, Emma, Abigail, and Jack Gurzynski of Middlebury; two sisters, Mary Stevenson and her husband, Matthew, of Thomaston and Patricia Ceritello and her husband, Kevin, of Bristol; two brothers, Thomas Shortt and his wife, Kathy, of Garner, N.C., and Robert Shortt and his wife, Linda, of Milford; and a brother-in-law, Dr. Tony Daloisio and his wife, Teresa, of Washington Depot and several nieces and nephews.
His funeral will be held Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at 9:15 a.m. from Chase Parkway Memorial, The Albini Family Funeral Home at 430 Chase Parkway in Waterbury to the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception Church at 74 West Main St. in Waterbury for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours are Wednesday from 8 to 9:15 a.m. at the funeral home.
