Beloved wife, daughter, granddaughter, and friend
Cherie Ann Stankus, DPT, of Middlebury, passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2025, surrounded by her loving family at the VITAS Inpatient Unit at St. Mary’s Hospital. After being diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in 2021, Cherie remained hopeful and positive until the very end. She was the cherished wife of Brian M. Stankus, with whom she shared love and devotion for more than half of her life.
Born on August 15, 1991, in Waterbury, Cherie was the beloved daughter of David and RoseAnn (Bly) Boucher. She grew up in Wolcott, where she graduated from Wolcott High School before continuing her education at the University of Rhode Island, earning a bachelor’s degree. Cherie’s passion for physical therapy led her to Boston University, where she proudly earned her doctorate. Her dedication to her field was evident in her work as the regional director and physical therapist for Connect Physical Therapy, a role that allowed her to impact the lives of many.
Cherie’s kindness and generosity were felt by all who knew her. She had a unique ability to connect with others, offering warmth, compassion, and love to everyone she met. Above all, Cherie adored her husband, Brian, and their bond was unwavering, especially during the most challenging moments of her illness. Their love was a true testament to the vows they made on their wedding day.
Cherie found joy and peace in the outdoors, often taking long walks and hikes. Having a deep appreciation for the beauty of nature, she took pride in doing her part to preserve the environment. She also loved to travel, never missing an opportunity for a trip. Her strong passion for music not only served as a source of great comfort throughout her life, but allowed her to attend many concerts with her husband. She was deeply spiritual and was grateful for every new experience.
Cherie is survived by her devoted husband, Brian, of Middlebury; her parents, David and RoseAnn Boucher of Watertown; and her beloved brother, David Tyler Boucher of New Mexico, as well as her maternal grandfather, Edward Bly of Watertown. She also leaves behind her in-laws, Anthony and Lori Stankus of Wolcott; her sister-in-law, Kimberly Saja, and her husband, Thomas, of Naugatuck; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who will cherish her memory always. She was endlessly devoted to her family, especially her mother.
Cherie’s spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved her, and she will be deeply missed.
The family would like to express heartfelt gratitude to the staff, nurses, and doctors at The Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center and the Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven, as well as the countless others who helped Cherie throughout her journey.
