Middlebury police said officers were dispatched to a burglary in progress at the Alltown Fresh store at 504 Middlebury Road in Middlebury around 12:30 a.m. Saturday, March 22, 2025. The store was closed at the time.
A passerby called to report the incident, saying they saw an SUV backed up to the front door, which was open, and several people were inside the store. When police arrived on the scene, the thieves had left, taking the stolen ATM with them.
The ATM was discovered in the rear parking lot at 687 Straits Turnpike around 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning. It is now in police custody.
On Saturday, plywood filled spaces in one of the double entry doors and a space to the right of the doors. Cones prevented entry through the righthand door, and a sign posted on the lefthand door advised customers to use that door.
Inside the store, the space once occupied by the ATM machine stood empty. Further details are unavailable at this time as this is an ongoing investigation.
