“Good Boys” (R) – An invite to his first party that might involve kissing sends Max (Jacob Trembley) and his best friends Thor (Brady Noon) and Lucas (Keith L. Williams) into a panicked quest for background info on anything carnal. The trio of tender tweens hijacks Max’s dad’s drone to spy on the teen girl next door, and when the drone is captured, it sets the kids off on a daylong adventure to replace it. It’s a movie about completely misinformed kids spouting near-knowledge of sex, so I expected crude and base jokes, rude sight gags and plenty of awkwardness. I was not disappointed. In fact, I was delighted.

“Angry Birds 2” (PG) – What’s better than animated birds and pigs going at it, flinging rocks and themselves in an attempt to destroy each other’s islands? A common enemy, perhaps? The angry bird crew – Red (voiced by Jason Sudeikis), Chuck (Josh Gad), Bomb (Danny McBride) and Mighty Eagle (Peter Dinklage) – pair up with a couple of porkies from Pig Island led by Leonard (Bill Hader) to defeat the ruler of Eagle Island, Zeta (Leslie Jones). The kids will love the flash and the quick pace. There are some jokes built in for the adults as well, so grab a bowl of popcorn and snuggle up with the kiddos.
“47 Meters Down: Uncaged” (PG-13) – Eschewing traditional diving tours for the offbeat, four teen girls (Corinne Foxx, Sistine Stallone, Sophie Nelisse and Brianne Tju) explore the underwater ruins of a Mayan temple, unaware that it has turned into a shark-infested playground. That would be terrible enough, but the structure itself is a labyrinth through which the girls must navigate if they want to make it out alive. It’s quite scary, if you have a healthy fear of sharks, but I was thrown off by the darkness of the location’s scenery.
“The Farewell” (PG) – Awkwafina heads this touching family drama as Billi, a young Chinese woman whose adored grandmother is discovered to have cancer. The family decides not to tell her, but instead gathers the relatives together for an improvised wedding celebration as cover. Billi struggles with both the family’s decision and to fit in with the old ways of doing things, all the while savoring sweet moments with family. Awkwafina is having a moment, and in “The Farewell,” she shows a whole new, extraordinary side to her talents. The story tugs at the heartstrings and every moment left me on the verge of tears.
