Dedicated Member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church
Mr. Steven J. Gagas, 83 of Waterbury, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2020, at Waterbury Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was the loving husband of Elpiniki “Nicki” (Velezis) Gagas.
Steve was born in Pentalofos, Kozani, Greece on Aug. 26, 1936, the son of the late John and Sophia (Vouyias) Gagas. He attended college in Austria, where he received a bachelor’s degree, and later came to the United States in 1961, settling in Waterbury. He worked as the office manager for 20 years for MTA (Motor Transport Association) and previously worked for Lombard Brothers for over 20 years until his retirement.
Steve was a dedicated member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church where he served as chairman of the Building Committee for the church now located on Chase Parkway. He also was a member and past president of the Parish Council, chairman of the annual Church Festival, member and past supreme president of the Pan Macedonian Association, member of the St. George Eptahorion Association, member and past president of AHEPA Chapter 48 (American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association) and the Pentalofos Society. Steve also enjoyed playing cards with his dear friends and spending time with his grandchildren.
Besides his wife, Nicki, of 58 years, Steve leaves to cherish his memory his two sons, John S. Gagas and his wife, Janet, and Nick S. Gagas and his wife, Heather, all of Middlebury; two sisters, Rena Hassapis and Chrysoula Kazarides and her husband, George, all of Greece; his beloved grandchildren, Alexandra, Steven, David, Micaela, Gabriella, Victoria and Gia Gagas, as well as many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and friends.
His funeral will be Monday, Feb. 17, 2020, at 9 a.m. at Chase Parkway Memorial/The Albini Family Funeral Home at 430 Chase Parkway in Waterbury to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church at 937 Chase Parkway for a service at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at New Pine Grove Cemetery in Waterbury. Calling hours will be Sunday, Feb. 16, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. A Trisagion Service will be held at the funeral home at 5:30 p.m., followed by a service by the members of AHEPA.
