Wayne Harrison Foote, 86, of Middlebury passed away at home on July 15, 2020, surrounded by his family. He was the loving husband of the late Sakiko (Yamashita) Foote for 25 years.
He was born on March 24, 1934, in Waterbury, Connecticut, son of the late Sarah (Stone) Foote and LeRoy Wilbur Foote. Wayne graduated from Oberlin College, Class of 1955. He served in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Japan, where he met his future wife, Sakiko. They married in 1960 and resided in New York City. She predeceased him in 1985. He enjoyed an over 30-year career with the Long Island Railroad.
Wayne proudly served on the board of the Middlebury Land Trust and was a member of the National Speleological Society. He also was an involved member of the Appalachian Mountain Club and was fondly given the trail name of “Trouble.” He was an active hike leader who led hundreds of hikes. He travelled all over the world, climbed many mountains. Wayne also was an avid geocaching enthusiast who, until his last weeks, still enjoyed discussing geocaches with his oldest grandson and fellow trailblazer, Matthew Foote. He built and maintained the Foote Path in Middlebury, Connecticut.
Wayne is survived by his children, Thomas, Susan and Barbara; a daughter-in-law, Theresa Foote; a son-in-law, Duane Addis; and two sisters, Carolyn Foote Marosz and Judi Foote. He also leaves grandchildren April Murray and husband Andrew; Matthew Foote and Christopher Addis; great-grandchildren Aden and Ashton Murray; a grand-dog, Maxie; along with several nieces and nephews.
His family knows that he has embarked on his next adventure.
