John J. Joy, 95, of Middlebury passed away Saturday, December 19, 2020, at his home.
Mr. Joy was born March 6, 1925, in Waterbury, a son of the late Richard and Katherine (Powers) Joy. John married Elizabeth Anderson at St. Patrick’s Church in Waterbury on October 2, 1954. She preceded him in death in 2015.
John was a graduate of Leavenworth High School Class of 1942. He was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corps who served for three years as an aerial gunner on B-24 aircraft and often told stories of his time in the Air Force. Mr. Joy was a firefighter for the City of Waterbury for 37 years, retiring in 1987 as a lieutenant. In his free time John enjoyed woodworking and was known as a skilled carpenter. A long-time Middlebury resident, he began building his residence in 1959 and moved there soon after with his growing family.
Mr. Joy is survived by his children, Deborah and her husband, Gary Austin of Green Bay, Wisconsin; John E. and his wife, Joanne Joy, of Waterbury; and Karen Smith of Greenwood, South Carolina; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. John was predeceased by his daughter Maureen Joy; his brother Richard Joy; and his son-in-law Rick Smith.
A funeral service with Waterbury Fire Department honors will be held Tuesday, December 22, 2020, at 11 a.m. at The Alderson-Ford Funeral Home of Naugatuck at 201 Meadow St. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the start of the service.
