Q: Is Gwyneth Paltrow really done with acting? Or is she going to be like Demi Moore only to return a few years later after retiring? – B.P.
A: Gwyneth Paltrow grew up in the movie industry. Her mother, Blythe Danner, is a successful movie actress (“Meet the Parents”), and her father, the late Bruce Paltrow, was a prominent producer (“St. Elsewhere”). Gwyneth has had an even bigger career than her parents, earning an Academy Award for “Shakespeare in Love” and then becoming a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Pepper Potts in “Iron Man” and its sequels.
In 2008, she launched GOOP, her online wellness and lifestyle company. Over the years, as she raised her two children, her focus has shifted away from acting and toward the GOOP brand. She almost abandoned her acting career after winning her Oscar at age 26. She told “Good Morning America” years later that she “didn’t love acting that much” and felt that she had reached her peak and didn’t know where to set her next goal.
Her most recent post-Marvel credit was the limited series “The Politician,” a comedy-drama on Netflix. Her husband, Brad Falchuk, is one of the creators of the “American Horror Story” franchise, so perhaps she’ll pop up on that series someday, but she seems pretty content building her lifestyle empire and being a self-described homebody.
Q: We have been watching the “NCIS” series and its spinoffs set in different cities. Which location is going to be next? My interest dropped in watching the original “NCIS” when Abby, the lab tech, was pulled from the series. She definitely was an added attraction to that program, and the two blondes didn’t help a bit. – N.M.
A: Pauley Perrette’s Abby, with her pigtails and bangs, was a fan favorite of the original “NCIS” series on CBS. Star Mark Harmon has been with the hit show since it began in 2003. It’s spawned two franchises, “NCIS: Los Angeles” and “NCIS: New Orleans,” which is ending after seven seasons.
However, like “Law & Order” and “CSI,” “NCIS” continues to spawn new franchises. Next up is “NCIS: Hawaii.” It’s the first “NCIS” show to star a female lead. Former entertainment correspondent turned actress Vanessa Lachey has won that role. “NCIS: Hawaii” is expected to be part of CBS’s fall lineup.
Q: I love “When Calls the Heart” on the Hallmark Channel. When will the new season begin? – S.S.
A: “When Calls the Heart” debuted on Hallmark in 2014 and has steadily become a big hit for the network. Some people might only know it as the show that Lori Loughlin was on before she went to federal prison for the college admissions scandal, but it has a big following besides the tabloids. Former “General Hospital” star Jack Wagner and Erin Krakow are among the show’s stars. Look for the ninth season to debut sometime in 2022.
