The glue that kept her family together

It is with a great sense of sadness and profound grief that we announce the passing of our beloved wife and lifetime partner, mother, grandmother and friend, Elizabeth K. “Betty” ( Kurtz) Deely, 89, of Middlebury, formerly of Waterbury, who passed on Thursday, September 14, 2023, at the Vitas Unit of St. Mary’s Hospital after a brief illness. She was the beloved wife of Robert “Bobby” Deely.

Betty was born on December 15, 1934, in Waterbury, the daughter of the late Theodore and Elizabeth (Ross) Kurtz. She was educated in local schools, graduated from Leavenworth High School, and attended the Waterbury Branch of UConn. Before she graduated, she was recruited to be the PBX operator and receptionist at Somers Brass in Waterbury, where she worked for several years. While raising her family, she also worked at SNETCO and Colonial Bank.

Betty was the life partner with her husband, Bobby. Where you found one, you found the other. She was a devout Christian and longtime member of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. Betty was a stellar example of grace and class. Betty lost her mother at an early age and raised her three sisters. This gave her a profound sense of family which she carried into her own life, instilling in her children a strong work ethic and the importance of family. She was not only the glue that kept her family together but was a foundation of joy, strength, and growth. Betty was a lifetime and active member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians and a very frequent visitor to Ireland, where she and Bob would cruise and search out family roots and customs. Our family thanks you Mom, for every prayer you uttered for us, for the many sacrifices you made for us, for thousands of hugs you shared with us and the unending love you instilled in all of us.

Left to honor her legacy and cherish her memory, besides her devoted husband of 65 years, are her children, her daughter, Deborah Pelletier and her husband, Donald, of Oxford and her sons, Robert Jr. and his wife, Cathy, of Monroe and Chief Patrick Deely of the Middlebury Police Department and his wife, Theresa, of Watertown. Bob and Betty were blessed with three grandchildren, Kristen and her husband, Eric Howe; Michael and his wife, Molly Deely; and Sean and Elisa Deely and her great-grandchildren, Henry, Luke and one on the way. Betty also leaves many nieces, nephews and cousins and scores of great friends. She was predeceased by her sisters; Anne Vendetti, Kay Alberto and Irene Blanchard.

Funeral services for Mrs. Deely will be Monday, September 18, 2023, at 10 a.m. when a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception at 74 West Main St in Waterbury. Those planning to attend are asked to meet directly at the church. Burial will follow in Mt Olivet Cemetery in Watertown. Relatives and friends may visit with the Deely family on Sunday, September 17, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Casey’s Eastside Memorial Funeral Home and Cremation Care at 1987 East Main St at Southmayd Road in Waterbury.
