The Middlebury Police Department, working with the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services Tobacco Prevention and Enforcement Program, on March 19 conducted unannounced compliance inspections of five Middlebury businesses that sell tobacco products and/or electronic cigarettes. Clerks at two of the businesses – the Mobil/Saltbox Country Store at 752 Straits Turnpike and the Citgo at 492 Middlebury Road – were issued first time infractions of $300 each for allegedly violating state law.
Businesses found in compliance with state law were the Cumberland Farms at 1680 Straits Turnpike, the Shell/All Town Market at 504 Middlebury Road and the Sunoco at 550 Middlebury Road. State law prohibits the sale of e-cigarettes and/or tobacco products to those younger than 21. Sellers of these products are required to inspect the photo ID of anyone who appears under the age of 30 before selling them these products.
Tobacco retailers are licensed by the Connecticut Department of Revenue Services (DRS). Inspection results showing noncompliance with state law are referred to the DRS for possible administrative action.
