Tom (Thomas) Proulx (aka Farmer, TE, Poppy) was born on February 19, 1947, in Waterbury, Conn., to Joe and Lucy Proulx. A proud veteran, devoted public servant, and lifelong community member, he passed away on December 24, 2024, at the age of 77 in Pittsburgh, Pa. Tom’s legacy is defined by his unwavering commitment to his country, his community, and the values that shaped his life.

Born in 1947, Tom grew up in Middlebury, Conn., where he would go on to serve for many years as a pillar of the community. After graduating high school, Tom joined the United States Navy, where he served with distinction from 1966 to 1970 during the Vietnam War. As a member of the VAW-113 Black Eagles, Tom played a vital role in naval aviation, participating in missions critical to the defense of the United States and its allies, and is a plank owner.

After returning home, Tom became an active member of the Middlebury Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as a lieutenant. His contributions to the fire department were immeasurable, and he was known for his steady leadership, dedication to safety, and his deep care for the welfare of others. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a testament to his enduring service and loyalty to his fellow veterans as well as the American Legion Oakville Post.

In addition to his military and fire service, Tom was involved in local conservation efforts. He volunteered on the Middlebury Conservation Committee, helping to protect and preserve the natural beauty of the area he loved. His work helped shape policies that balanced the needs of the community with the preservation of Middlebury’s scenic landscapes.

Tom also took great pride in being a stockholder in the Green Bay Packers, a passion that spoke to his love of sports and his connection to a team that embodied teamwork, perseverance, and resilience. Other passions for Tom included NASCAR, fishing, hunting, camping, raising turkeys, and swearing.

Tom was known for his quick wit, his love for a good story, and his ever-present willingness to lend a hand to anyone in need. He cherished his family and friends, and his legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched. Tom’s passing leaves a void in the Middlebury community, but his spirit will endure through the values he upheld and the countless acts of service that marked his life.

Tom is survived by his loving wife, Betty (aka Chief), of 52 years; children Kimberly (aka Magee) and Jennifer (aka JP); grandchildren Kaley, Brody, and Evelyn; brothers Jack Proulx (wife Linda) and Richard Proulx (wife Angela); and several nieces and nephews; and brother-in-law, Andy Leahy. He was preceded in death by his son, Dean.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a GoFundMe to help support the needs of his granddaughter Kaley who lives with Rett Syndrome. Donations can be made at spot.fund/InMemoryOfTomProulx.
